PUBLISHER’S NOTE
FLY LIKE AN EAGLE
R
etired American Airlines pilot Richard Lindekens took up photography after he stopped flying for a living. When he
brought over his portfolio, we were as bowled over by the quality of his images as one of the small creatures knocked
unconscious by the eagles of Mongolia, which dive bomb toward Earth at speeds up to 120 mph to stun their unlucky
prey. Lindekens has been to Bayan Olgii in Western Mongolia four times and has made friends with these men who
hunt with eagles, experiencing the 30-degrees-below-zero (Fahrenheit) temperatures and the communal bedrooms in the hunters’
modest abodes to record a way of life few individuals will ever experience.
GETTING AWAY
T
here is often no real reason to “get away” from here, as Montecito
is
the ultimate getaway, but the travel bug lies
just below the surface for many. In order to assuage that irresistible urge, we’ve chosen La Quinta Resort & Club
in California’s Coachella Valley – one of the oldest resorts in the Palm Springs area and a longtime favorite of
the Hollywood crowd – as our “Weekend Getaway.” Kid-friendly and dog-friendly La Quinta has been a favorite
of ours, too, ever since
MJ
founder James Buckley dropped in for a weekend stay three years ago and partook of chef Jimmy
Schmidt’s sensational breast of duck in a seasonal blood-orange reduction sauce at Morgan’s in the Desert. The charm of this
resort rests, however, not only in its award-winning restaurant but also in its history, its amenities (“796 casitas, suites and
villas, vacation home rentals, nine championship golf courses, an award-winning spa, 23 tennis courts, 41 sparkling pools,
and 53 hot tubs”), its easy three-to-five-hour drive from Montecito (depending upon traffic), and its guaranteed perfect
weather nearly seven months of the year.
THE HARDER THEY COME
A
free-range conversation with Montecito’s reigning literary lion, internationally acclaimed short-story author and
novelist T.C. Boyle, who moved to our village some 23 years ago, rounds out just some of the offerings in this issue.
As always, we are pleased to once again welcome you to our neighborhood.
