CONVERSATIONS
Novelist Thomas Coraghessan Boyle – that’s T.C. Boyle to his readers and students – has penned
numerous books, hundreds of short stories, and earned ample honors (including the 2015 REA Award), has
a trio of children, taught creative writing at USC for almost four decades, and recently parted ways with
Viking publishing in favor of Ecco.
Journal
founder James Buckley knows all this because he sat down with
the writer at his Montecito home, which Boyle – “the only writer in history who’s had only one wife” – shares
with his spouse of 42 years, Karen.

PASADENA ON PARADE
Jerry Camarillo Dunn, Jr. boasts a newfound appreciation for Pasadena, with its unsurpassed climate and
rich antiquity of arts and architecture against a backdrop of oak trees and the San Gabriel Mountains. The

House and “Bungalow Heaven” district to the hallowed halls of Pacific Asia and Norton Simon museums.

KENDALL CONRAD
Accessory and handbag designer Kendall Conrad – inspired by her late father, Barnaby, and further
motivated by traversing European fashion cornerstones that served as incubators for her career – has long
since made a name for herself (while husband and photographer David Cameron operates the business
side). Megan Waldrep takes note of how Kendall has established firm footing in style around Santa Barbara.

EAGLE HUNTERS
Since settling in SB County years ago, retired airline pilot and Vietnam veteran Richard Lindekens sought
a different type of career: that of photography.
Montecito Journa
l’s Thedim Fiste paints a portrait of the
indefatigable man who has downplayed cancer treatment to focus his gaze on eagles, the men who hunt
with them, and how Lindekens’s photos have taken wing – from the Department of the Interior to the
Elverhoj Museum in Solvang.

WEEKEND GETAWAY
Although it’s more than 200 miles from Montecito, the La Quinta
Resort & Club is a “desert playground” worth the trip, writes

’s
James Buckley, who ventures to the heart of Coachella Valley, where
Waldorf Astoria Resorts oversee La Quinta’s array of golf courses,
swimming pools, Hollywood-style villas, tennis courts, fine dining (try
chef Jimmy Schmidt’s cuisine at Morgan’s), and other amenities.
