“Most of the designs I do,” she says, “will be
blocks
of color, as
opposed to little patterns and prints. I tend to like simple details, but
not fussy details.” She has been inspired, she says, by Mexican architect
Luis Barragan. She has also been inspired “by the smell and texture of
Montecito, its shadows, light, volumes of space and the shapes that
define it.”
A New Beginning
Ms Chase began her interior design career working on Time Warner
offices in Rockefeller Center, and went on to design private residences
for a number of CEOs in New York City and London. Other projects
included suites at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan (on the residential side),
homes in Riven Rock, on Padaro Lane and elsewhere in the Santa Barbara
and Los Angeles areas.
As for her philosophy of design: “Luxury shouldn’t look like one has
tried too hard,” she avers. “I believe in mixing luxury with the relaxed. I
love discovering things along the way,” she continues, “I don’t want to see
the whole show the minute I go in a room.”
Linda is partial to certain materials: “I love the idea of the luminosity
of beautiful plaster. I love the vernacular. In Montecito,” she notes, “there
is a certain modern quality in the sense of volume in the older homes
built here, even though the influence is Andalusian, Mediterranean, and
Spanish.” For her, it’s that “juxtaposition of understanding the rules and
knowing when they can be broken” that appeals to her design sense.
Linda Chase’s showroom, to be called NU Vignette, is located at
2272 Lillie Avenue in Summerland and will be open to the public. Items
for sale will include chandeliers, rock crystals, lamps, limited edition
furniture, upholstered pieces, cast pieces, speciality cabinets, even fabrics
for tablecloths, napkins... in other words, things that are “a little bit
different... refined with a twist of fun, whimsy, the unexpected...”
Linda Chase has collaborated with Karl Kemp on a massive and
handsome book, “The World of Biedermeier,” for Thames & Hudson
(featuring stunning photographs by Lois Lammerhuber), and with Laura
Cerwinski for “In The Romantic Style; Creating Intimacy, Fantasy and
Charm in the Contemporary Home,” and “In Your Own Style; The
book that puts you in control of the design process” (with photographs
by David Phelps). Ms Chase can be reached at 805-845-7600 or via her
website: lindachaseassociates.com.
