GETTING UP TO SPEED
W
alking out of the DMV for a newly licensed driver is arguably one of the most defining moments in a Southern California teenager’s
life. Something that is so normal, so mundane to the over-16 crowd, is just about the only thing adolescents think about until they’ve
passed the test, turned the ignition, and are able to head down the 101.
But automobiles take on a different meaning for a driver as that first drive moves further into the past. The car, its form, design, horsepower,
and cost, becomes part of a pride of ownership unique to automotives. What gets you from point A to point B inherits a different set of values:
beauty, speed, and status.
In Montecito, the 4th Annual Montecito Motor Classic took place September 27 with entries from owners coming from all across
California to showcase their rarest and most exotic automobiles. The show included 110 entries in a variety of classes, including
vintage, classic, sports cars, and preservation pieces.
Michael Hammer, participant and planner for the Classic, and board member for the Petersen Automotive
Museum, explained his take on car collecting saying that when “we are young we play with toys, and as
we get older, the toys become bigger and more expensive.”
