and slid down into the snow. This girl came up to me and asked
if she could call the ski patrol, and I said, “Please.” They took me
down the mountain on a gurney. I was out of it.
I spent ten days, maybe two weeks in the hospital in
Taos. Then I went back to San Antonio, Texas [in order to
get my health and stamina back]. I started by just taking a
walk around the backyard, then down the driveway, then to
the corner and around the block, and eventually three miles
a day. The following year I skied down the same mountain
and passed the same spot and said, “Thank you,” and
continued down.
Did you think to yourself then that perhaps you would not live
a long life?
Yes, I did. While I was lying there I prayed and just kept
thinking about Peggy Lee’s recording of “Is That All There Is?”
