94 Montecito Memories
Doing it “by the numbers,” wasn’t exactly Christopher
Buckley’s strongest point during his elementary-school years
at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel School. Try as he might, he never
quite figured out the difference between a divisor and a
dividend. One saving grace of his painful math experiences,
however, was scoring a 71 that kept him in college – and out
of Vietnam.
100 On Canvas
Hailing from Seattle, plein air artist Jordan Pope moved
to Santa Barbara to capture its unique luminescent colors
due to its location on a south-facing outreach of land. She
opened Portico Gallery in Montecito twelve years ago, and
has been working on a collection called “Twelve Months of
Light” for two years.
104 Montecito Matrimony
The weddings of Ashley Mackenzie & Adam Buckley, Kiley
DiRado & Cody Evans, Roger Florentine & Jeffrey Buck, Ashley
Waterman & Michael Anchordoquy, Christine My & Ross Hale,
Anne Rizzoli & Don Ford, Kristina Donahue and TJ Daly are
featured this issue.
120 Up and Out
Julian Nott sheds some starlight on a danger to the earth:
asteroids. Astronaut Ed Lu tracks down these celestial
projectiles, calculating when, where, and if they’ll fall on our
terrain. To do so, he needs a little help: the space telescope
“Sentinel” will be positioned near Venus’ orbit for better
asteroid-spotting than scientists can do from the earth.
128 Far Flung Travel
The Galapagos archipelago straddles 600 miles of ocean
off the coast of Ecuador and is famed for the diverse
species that inhabit the islands. MJ correspondent Chuck
Graham visited them recently and gingerly explored among
the unimpressed and unafraid creatures whose unique
characteristics inspired Charles Darwin’s “On The Origin Of
Species.”
134 Weekend Getaway
Yountville is a wine hamlet in Napa Valley that serves as a
perfect home-base for checking out the area’s architecture,
art, and, of course, wine. A magnet for world-class
practitioners of the culinary arts, Yountville has three Michelin-
starred restaurants and a slew of chefs making magic with
fresh, local ingredients.
140 Eateries
For a tiny coastal village (population: 10,000) wedged
comfortably between the mountains and the sea, Montecito
has an array of excellent dining choices. You’ll find every
one of them listed in this guide, along with selected others
between Carpinteria and Goleta.

28 Sport
“We have very good polo here,” says Dan Walker, president
of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. “There’s no better
polo anywhere in the country,” writes Steven Libowitz, who not
only explains the rules of the game, but also highlights this year’s
players (including some of the best in the world), sponsors, and
patrons.
34 Profiles
Jeff Hall knew that he was going to be a professional polo
player when he was six years old. He didn’t let anything get in
his way and he now has his eye on the Bombardier Pacific Coast
Open right here at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.
36 Polo Party Central
Not only is the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club host to some
of the top polo players in the world, it’s also a hotspot for some
of the most lavish parties around. This season is no exception;
expect to mingle with stars and, if the rumors are true, royalty.
40 Passion for Polo
When Leigh Brecheen isn’t in the office working as an
entertainment attorney, she can be found on the polo field, as
one of only a few female polo players on the field this season.
Known around the stables as the “Carrot Queen,” Leigh is
ranked as a zero-goal player and says this area is “the most
beautiful, perfect polo destination in the world.”
54 Conversations
Magic Castle founder Milt Larsen says that for all the time he was
a writer for the long-lasting TV show, Truth Or Consequences,
he “couldn’t wait to go to work,” and refers to his twenty-year
tenure there as “some of the most fun experiences of my life.”
Truth Or Consequences spawned Candid Camera and This Is
Your Life.
70 Portraits of Women
Top-rated portrait photographer TC Reiner is no stalker, but he
does want his prey to be completely off guard; his subjects
don’t give him the pose he wants; he simply takes whatever
he needs after they’re through posing. Results of his technique
speak for themselves, as attested to by W, Cosmopolitan,
Vogue, and many other outlets.
80 Early Polo In Santa Barbara
Editors of what was then the Santa Barbara Morning Press
predicted that, after a polo exhibition match during the 1894
Floral Festival, presumably on the half-mile racetrack built in the
Agricultural Park near what is now East Beach’s “Funk Zone,” “a
Santa Barbara Polo Club will be the outcome of this exhibition.”
They were right, of course.
