Christine My & Ross Hale
fter first meeting at UC Santa Barbara through a mutual friend, Christine My and Ross
Hale reconnected while both were living in San Francisco after graduation. What began as two
friends sharing a love of surfing, quickly turned into romance after a surf trip to Costa Rica in 2008.
Three years later, Ross packed a ring in his surfboard bag and took Christine, their dog Reiley, and some
friends to one of their favorite surf spots: Ellwood Beach. While they surfed, Reiley guarded the ring on the
beach, and when the couple returned a few hours later, Ross popped the question, while their friends took
pictures of the moment.
The groom’s parents also met at UCSB, so the couple knew they
wanted to be married in the Santa Barbara area. “We’re sure our
daughter will also be a Gaucho!” the bride says. Planning the
wedding was no trouble, as the bride admits she already had it
planned long before the proposal. The couple agreed on a semi-formal
garden wedding in Montecito, at the Hot Springs Oasis Estate. They were
married on May 19, 2012, with Reiley leading the way down the aisle.
The 120 guests were seated at white linen-covered tables in the garden, where after dinner they were treated
to homemade pies and sweets. Lavender sprigs were placed at each place setting, tucked into a plum colored
napkin. Centerpieces were tall vases filled with water and orchids, adding to the natural and organic theme.
Guests were invited to sign a surfboard the couple shaped; later it was glassed as a keepsake. The wedding party was asked to learn a choreographed dance, which
they performed with the bride and groom to entertain guests. After the spring wedding, the couple headed back to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, where they had surfed
years before as friends. “We were stoked to go back again as husband and wife,” they say.
The couple now lives in Pacific Palisades, but visit Santa Barbara often to see family. On December 31, 2012, the pair welcomed a new addition: their first
daughter, Charlotte Van Hale.
